Who Says Manly Men Can Not Be Romantic?

The notion of a romantic evening for a lot of us guys includes preparation in the form of reservations, flower purchasing and some form of evening entertainment, perhaps a movie, concert or dancing. This has been a tried and true method of courtship for ages, and it still works very well. But every once in a long while, it just might be a good idea to really surprise her with an evening at home she is likely to never forget. You have it in you to handle this and still not be seen as a wimp.

Women really like the idea that you went out of your way to do something special for them with your own hands, not just that you found something they might like and bought it for them. There are certainly enough commercial options out there to keep you lady happy, capitalism has not lost the notion that buying something is easier than making something, and they are more than happy to help us with this problem. Nevertheless, you can do something that she will remember for a very long time without taking cooking classes or reading some king of homemaking magazine.

But since spending the day in the kitchen does not appeal to us, we begin with the trusty poulan chainsaw in the shed. Grab that man tool and head out to a place where you can fell a tree and cut into logs for firewood. It does not diminish the effort if you have to pay someone for the honor of cutting the firewood yourself, tonight is about doing things with your own hands for her. Once you have the logs in the right lengths for your fireplace, split them into pieces and load up the truck.

Now you can stack all that firewood in the truck and it will be good not just for tonight but for the future as well. Returning home you an stack the firewood and prepare the fireplace, comfortable in that you are preparing for the special dinner, but still doing the manly thing. Just make sure that you have everything you need to make that fire, it would not do to discover at the last minute that you have no kindling or matches; this should be an error free event.

Now the tough part, you are going to prepare a meal that both you and she will enjoy, and do it with your own hands. The first step is to get the required elements of this meal, and resist the temptation to purchase a ready-made meal from the supermarket, it is not a bad idea, but tonight you are doing this all yourself. If you do not already have one, it is time to head to the local kitchen store a pick up an electric rice cooker; they are excellent functional devices at a reasonable price. If you already own one, we move on.

Naturally, you are going to need a small bag of Japanese rice (not long grain or wild rice). While you are at the grocery store, pick up a couple of cans of cream of mushroom soup, and your choice of broiled chicken, uncooked scallops or shrimp, whatever you and she like. If you have different tastes; she does not like scallops, but you love them; get both, the meal will still work out great. Go to the frozen food section and pick out some vegetables that you can microwave. Pick up a bag of shredded cheese (your choice or the mixture bags.) A pre-made tossed salad large enough for two is not cheating, a loaf of French bread and a bottle of wine and you are ready.

The first step is to read the instructions for setting the rice, so you can start it first. It is so easy to do and you ca not fail to make perfect rice. Turn it on and head upstairs for a well deserved shower. Although it is still late afternoon, prepare as though you were getting ready for an important day at work, or going out to an expensive restaurant. She will appreciate that you took the time to look nice even for an evening at home.

Now that you are ready, the rice should be as well. Time for the magic part of cooking, if you think of it as a chemistry lab, you will be fine. Get out a pan that is safe to use in the oven, which you now preheat to 325 degrees. In the pan, scoop out enough rice to cover the bottom of the pan to a depth of about an inch and a half. Now open the cream of mushroom and cover the rice, but remember you are not making soup, so do not overdue the sauce. Now place your selected topping, shredding the chicken if you bought a whole cooked breast, or distribute the scallops or shrimp evenly. Now sprinkle the shredded cheese over the mixture evenly and cover with aluminum foil. Place the vegetables in a microwaveable bowl and the pan in the preheated oven at last 35 minutes before dinner. You are ready to start the fire.

For the final step, set the table in front of the fire with your finest dishware, pour the wine and set a glass of water and you are ready for the evening. When the rice has cooked for about thirty minutes (the seafood should be fully cooked and the cheese bubbling and slightly browned (not burned so be careful to check every five minutes after the first 25) remove the pan and the aluminum foil and let it cool. Now you have a perfect romantic meal made by hand to impress her, and it was done in manly style including the use of your homelite chainsaw.
