Plant Xyz

What would America do if…?

11:55am
A group of 25 – 30 terrorists has seized control of the Indian Point
Nuclear Power Plant approximately 30 miles north of New York City. The military style commando attack included at least a truck that crashed through the security gates, and scuba divers from the Hudson river. Some guards were killed in the initial attack and everyone else in the plant are now hostages.

12:30pm
A spokesperson of the terrorist group contacted the White House and
identified themselves as being apart of XYZ group. They claim to have the capabilities to destroy the facility with explosives, this would result in catastrophic damage to the area for miles, including the city.

I understand this is highly improbable, but what do you think America would do?
tchristo can you elaborate on the impossibility of much damage being done were they to blow it up with conventional explosives? the only way they could do real damage is to cause a meltdown?

Except for the fact that nuclear reactors don’t blow up the same way as the bombs do right…

If they simply blew up the facility rather than causing it to meltdown, there would be a bloom of radioactivity, but the actual blast wouldn’t damage much at all.

If they melted down the reactor you could have melted radioactive fuel rods burning into the ground until they hit groundwater causing a massive steam explosion from underground though, that could be kind of fun, but just using a bomb and blowing it up wouldn’t knock over a city or anything, the fuel isn’t military grade and the facility isn’t designed to cause an explosion

So um, i suppose the easiest way would be a remote shutdown of the plant, and a good 500lb bomb

As for the hostages, the authorities here are normally more concerned with neutralizing the bad guys than saving the good guys.
